Marcel Khalife: Midtøstens protestsanger / Songs of protest
I samtale med Wesam Almadani om musikken og poesiens politiske kraft, og samarbeidet med den palestinske nasjonalskalden Mahmoud Darwish. //
In conversation with Wesam Almadani about music’s political power, and the artistic collaboration with Palestinian national poet, Mahmoud Darwish.
For den verdenskjente musikeren Marcel Khalife har kunst og politikk vært forbundet fra starten. Libanons Lillebjørn Nilsen holdt sine første konserter i utbombede lokaler under landets borgerkrig på 1970-tallet, og ble tidlig engasjert i saken til det palestinske folket. Mens vennen og samarbeidspartneren Mahmoud Darwish skrev den palestinske uavhengighetserklæringen i 1988, laget Khalife under den første intifadaen i 1989 låta: «Nashid al-Intifada» – intifadaens refreng. Khalifes mange tolkninger av Darwish’ dikt har vært et trøstende lydspor for det palestinske folket gjennom tiår med konflikt og lidelse.
Khalife har i den arabiske verden ikke bare status som musiker, men folkehelt. For tolkningen av Darwish’ dikt «Å min far, jeg er Josef», som spiller på fortellingen i Koranen og Det gamle testamentet, ble Khalife i tre omganger tiltalt for blasfemi. Han ble til slutt frikjent, og har siden vært en forkjemper for det frie ord og retten til å uttrykke seg.
Som kunstner har Khalife vært en fornyer av arabiske musikktradisjoner, uredd i sin blanding av tradisjonelle og moderne uttrykk. Han er komponist, låtskriver og sanger, samt en virtuos på strengeinstrumentet oud, som han har vært en sentral fornyer av bruken av.
På Litteraturhuset møter Khalife Wesam Almadani. Aktivisten og poeten Almadani kom til Norge som palestinsk flyktning, har vokst opp med Khalifes musikk, og vil samtale med han om betydningen av den og av det livslange engasjementet for Palestina.

For the world-famous musician Marcel Khalife, art and politics have been connected from the beginning. Often referred to as the Bob Dylan of the Middle East, he held his first concerts during his home country Lebanon’s civil war in the 1970s, under constant threat of bombing. He became invested in the Palestinian cause early in his career. While his friend and collaborator Mahmoud Darwish wrote the Palestinian Declaration of Independence in 1988, Khalife during the first intifada in 1989 released the song “Nashid al-Intifada” – chorus of the intifada. Throughout his career, Khalife has released musical interpretations of several of Darwish’ poems. A soundtrack of consolation for the Palestian people through many years of conflict and suffering.
In the Arab world, Khalife is regarded as much a folk hero as a musician. For his interpretation of Darwish’ poem «Oh my father, I am Yusuf», which makes use of the story known from the Quran and the Bible, Khalife was prosecuted for blasphemy on three different occasions. Finally aquitted, he has since been a champion for the right to free expression.
As an artist Khalife has been a renewer of Arab musical traditions, boldly mixing both modern and traditional elements. He is a composer, songwriter and singer, and a gifted player of the oud, a string instrument.
At the House of Literature Khalife will meet Wesam Almadani. This activist and poet came to Norway as a Palestinian refugee, has grown up with Khalife’s music, and will meet him in conversation about his life’s work and it’s impacts.
The conversation will be held in English.
